In 1985, after
completing her Masters of Arts in Interdisciplinary Consciousness
Studies at John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, CA, Pat returned to
Columbia, SC, where she met and later married her husband, John.
Employed as a writer and trainer for USC's Center for Child and Family
Studies, she also taught an evening class titled, "Mind: The New
Frontier," through the University's Short Course Program. Later, at
the request of
participants, she developed another course, "The Art of Creative
Visualization," which focused on the practical application of new
discoveries about the mind.
In 1990, with her
husband, she opened the business, Open Books & other Resources,
a holistic bookstore and learning center in Columbia. Through the
business, they made available to the community books, music and other
media in a variety of areas related to personal and spiritual growth,
including holistic and alternative health, new science, and leading-edge
exploration of human consciousness.
As part of the Open
Books workshop program, Pat continued to teach classes in creative
visualization and develop the course. In 1995 she published The Art of Creative
Visualization: A Self-teaching Workbook. Originally designed for
people who couldn't take the six-week, evening class, the workbook
became a valuable adjunct to the on-site course, providing continued
structure for learning and practice long after the course was completed.
Open Books
was closed in early 1997, partly in response to the proliferation of
mega bookstores opening in the area which were carrying ever-increasing
percentages of the Open Books inventory. But the business was
also closed to make room in Pat and John's life for a new arrival--a
baby girl. Wanting to be home with their daughter during
her early years, Pat satisfied her professional urges with improvements
to the course workbook, upgrading the look and adding new graphics.
In 2002, the idea
of a website to make Pat's course
available over the Internet was born. Her past experiences as an artist,
writer, educator, and businesswoman have all come together for this new
creative project. It is something she has passionately visualized, over and
over again. In many ways, a dream come to life using creative
visualization!
