Pat's Review: This
is my favorite book to assist with dream interpretation. When I am unsure
of the meaning of something presented to me in a dream, I look first to
Tanner’s list of dream symbols. Whether you are a beginner in or master of
dream interpretation, you will find much to value in this book.
Part I of the book covers
some of the basics of understanding dreams and dream interpretation
including the major purpose of dreams (problem solving); some history of
dream interpretation; kinds of dreams; dream journaling; working with dream
symbols; and lucid dreaming.
Tanner’s writing style is
very comfortable—she is a wise and happy lady sharing with the reader very
useful information in a way that is interesting, assessable, and relatively
brief (no weighty tome here!) I also very much appreciate the uplifting
spirituality expressed throughout the book. Dreams are directly connected to
our spiritual experience and she neither tries to tie them to religious
dogma nor burden them with academic analysis.
Part II covers the
interpretation of dream symbols. She separates symbols into useful
categories: Animals; Background Settings; Battles, Conflicts, and Fights;
The Body and Its Parts; Buildings and Parts of Buildings; Colors In Dreams
and Auras; Games and Sports; Nudity; Numbers; People; Vehicles of
Transportation; Weather; and the like.
There are 33 categories in
all, each filled with simple, clear information related to the subject and
symbols. For example, under the category of “Buildings and Parts of
Buildings,” she includes the subcategories of Buildings; Building
Conditions; Building Activities; Building Environment; Floors & Levels of
Buildings; Types of Buildings; Homes, Houses, and Rooms; and Parts of
Buildings.
Under the subcategory of
Buildings, she writes,
Buildings represent varied states
of consciousness, awareness, associations, and general belief systems. The
type of building would define that particular state of consciousness. The
yard around the building would depict the outer extensions of that
particular type of influence.
Under that, she goes into
more detail on various aspects, such as:
OCCUPYING: The building you are
occupying would represent your present state of mind.
I find this format very
easy to use and understand, as it gives simple yet insightful information to
the reader.
A complete index at the
back makes it easy to look up any dream symbol. There are times when I dream
of something not included in Tanner’s book—but they are few and far between.
I have several other dream interpretation books on my shelf to use as
backups when this happens. But I always look to The Mystical Magical
Marvelous World of Dreams first!
